One of the principle longings of each one of our hearts is to belong. As we begin exploring the Mission Chattanooga, one of our natural questions becomes how do each of one of us fit into this story? Can you imagine choosing a job, or going into a marriage, without first understanding the commitments or expectations of that relationship? And yet, people walk into church relationships blindly all of the time. That’s crazy. If God is as important as we say He is, and if a person’s church is one of the primary means by which that person connects with God, then it can be well argued that a person’s relationship with his/her church is one of the most critical relationships in one’s life. Though the Mission is constantly evolving and changing with every new person that enters into the narrative, over time we have discovered that being a part of this community involves four essential commitments: to belong, to grow, to serve and to go. When, it comes to belonging, we realize that it is God who makes us a people. He initiates the formation of our community, and we belong to Him first. We are His treasure. All of us belong! Every last one of us belong; no matter how bad or good we think we are; no matter how dirty or ugly or clean and pretty we may feel; we belong because He rescues us, and we are His. That is what it means to be a part of the family of God. Because we belong, we do everything in our power to “belong in” others. We have an intense longing for others to find the same love and acceptance… the same belonging that we have found. Our door is always open to the next searching soul that needs a home. People are welcomed to belong here, even before they believe. Learn more about “belonging” in Mission Pathways.
